A Journey Round My Theatre
A Journey Round My Theatre is a poetic amble through The REP’s foyer areas narrated by architect Graham Winteringham who is also my grandad. While it will keep you physically located in the front of house areas, we hope Graham’s descriptions and the sounds included help imaginatively to transport you to the admin offices, workshop, dressing rooms and even the boards of the main house stage. We’ve included the voices of the people who work here and fragments of sounds captured from the daily life of The REP. As well as the more familiar sounds of back stage ‘calls’ and the laughter and applause of a delighted audience, there are sounds you might not expect to hear or associate with ‘theatre’: the photocopier running off rehearsal schedules, an iron steaming through 40 shirts in preparation for the evening show, the squeaky wheel on a rubbish trolley. This soundwalk is a tribute to The REP but also to the man who designed it.
The soundwalk takes around 40 minutes and is best experienced on location in The REP listened to with a pair of decent headphones. You can download the track from our SoundCloud account by clicking on the ‘download’ icon above (70MB), stream it via The REP’s free wi-fi by clicking on the ‘play’ icon above, or you can borrow a player from the Box Office when you arrive at The REP.
All this information is on our flyer, plus a helpful map to guide you around. Download it here: Download the pdf flyer with map here
When you are ready to start make your way to the Box Office and press play.
