Come Heavy Sleep
Inspired by Shakespeare, a murder story told through song.
Come Heavy Sleep is a passion-fuelled murder story that takes inspiration from Shakespeare’s bloodier plays. This performance tests ideas that will eventually develop into a large-scale ensemble spectacle, fronted by the band The Come Heavies with bold choreography, chopped-up narrative and stunning visuals. The music moves from 16th Century Lute to Noise Pop into Industrial Grindcore and 1950′s-style romantic ballad.
The 2012 development of Come Heavy Sleep was co-commissioned by RSC PILOT Night, mac birmingham and Coventry University.
Very early ideas for this project started at RSC Pilot Night, July 2012. This 15 minute test was made in collaboration with TAPP, a graduate ensemble of performers from Coventry University and 101 New Music Theatre. Taking inspiration from Shakespeare’s bloodiest tales we told an invented murder story in reverse with no spoken text, but with a strong physical language and a musical score played live throughout.
The 2013 development of Come Heavy Sleep was commissioned by Birmingham Repertory Theatre.
We worked with Birmingham Repertory Theatre and a brilliant team of talented creatives to develop a little more of this show, which will go on tour in Spring 2015, and two work-in-progress performances took place at The REP’s new studio space in December 2013.
